Assault on Sikh youth: 2 suspects arrested | | Images News Network
Srinagar, July 29: Police today arrested two suspects in connection with the shocking incident, in which unknown persons assaulted a Sikh Youth in Awantipora area of South Kashmir sparking off protests by the community members across Jammu and Kashmir.
Reports and eyewitnesses told that a group of unidentified persons last evening intercepted a Sikh youth identified as Mathan Singh near Malangpora village in Pulwama district and assaulted him. The unknown men also forcibly cut his hair before fleeing from the spot.
The Sikh youth was on way to his Divar residence in the neighboring Tral area, when the miscreants assaulted him.
When the news spread in Tral, hundreds of community members this morning took to streets and staged demonstrations. Shouting slogans, the protesting community members were demanding identification and punishment for the accused.
Reports of protests against the incident have also poured in from Jammu province.
Meanwhile hundreds of community members today staged demonstrations at Nanak Nagar, Digiana and other areas to protest the act.
In Srinagar, hundreds of members of Sikh community members staged demonstrations against the incident at Press Colony. Chanting slogans, the protesters were demanding identification and arrest of the persons responsible for the' inhuman act'.
"We're ready to leave Valley, if government wants us to. However, religious interference will not be tolerated," said protesting Sikh leaders.
Meanwhile, the community members also staged demonstrations against the incident in Awantipora and other areas of South Kashmir.
Police sources said that a case has been registered and efforts were on to nab the accused persons.
"We have arrested two suspects so far. We're hopeful the culprits will be brought to book within a few days," Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, South Kashmir, Shafqat Watali told.
